ABS/TCS - ESP Lamp ON/DTC's 53255/09783/18265

ESP warning light comes on intermittently

Condition

ESP warning light comes on intermittently.
The following DTCs may be found in the diagnosis log:

-

Fault code 53255 - battery energy manager control module - is logged into the engine control module.

Fault code 09783 - engine torque signal A (sporadic) - is logged into the transmission control module.

-

Fault code 18265 - load signal fault message from the engine control module (sporadic) - is logged into the ABS/ESP control module.

-

Fault codes that are entered into the engine control module and are communicated to the ABS/ESP control module may cause the ESP light to
come on. Please address all fault codes that are logged in the engine control module before proceeding with this bulletin.

Technical Background

Missing or an incorrect load signal from the battery energy manager control module (BEM) due to one of the following conditions:

1. Software bug in the BEM.
2. Voltage regulator / alternator is faulty.
3. Bit-synchronous interface between the alternator and BEM is faulty.
4. Communication fault to the BEM through a faulty CAN transceiver.
5. Current sensor in the BEM supplies incorrect values.

Production Solution

1. Improved software beginning with software version 0490.
2. Improved production process.
3. Improved production process.
4. Improved CAN transceiver.
5. Currently under analysis.

Service

1. Check the software version of the BEM. Update if necessary. Refer to TSB 2010077.

A6: Software version at least 0490.
A8: software version at least 0510. Note:  2004 A8 models and A8 models with BEM software versions 0270 or lower are not affected.
Q7: Not affected

2. In the BEM the following fault codes may be displayed:

a. 02252 - alternator.
b. 02479 - partial consumer shut off active.
c. 00992 - consumer shut off active.

These fault codes point to an alternator or wiring fault. Perform an alternator test through guided fault finding, if necessary replace the voltage
regulator or alternator.

3. In the BEM the following fault code may be displayed: 02254 - interface to the alternator.

Check the wiring and connections between the alternator and BEM. It may be necessary to route an overlay harness for diagnosing. Repair
damaged wires and / or connections as required.

4. If there are no fault codes in the BEM, but there are communication fault codes for the BEM in other control modules:

Reset terminal 30 on the BEM (disrupt the power supply at terminal 30). If this does not resolve the complaint, replace the BEM. Please note that
the fault code must be present for at least 10 minutes before the ESP warning light will come on.

Note:  Communication faults may have appeared due to a battery that had low voltage. Make sure that the battery had a full charge at the time of
the complaint.

5. If there are no fault codes in the BEM and there are no communication faults codes for the BEM in other control modules:

Reset terminal 30 on the BEM. (Disrupt the power supply at terminal 30.) Replacing the BEM does not fix the problem. Please note that the fault
code must be present for at least 10 minutes before the ESP warning light will come on.
